Doctrine Matters

There are times when doctrine matters, even if it means leaving something you love. Read Jim Packer’s interview on his leaving the Canadian Anglican Communion.

Dear Sam,
Thanks for dropping by my blog again. You must have a church that really loves you.. so many had told me what a pity it was that I did not get to meet you during my visit to Wellsprings
Reading more of your entries, I do wish I had met you! But, God’s providence is best..
On the subject of sound doctrine, I wholeheartedly agree that it certainly matters, and that we must sometimes make painful decisions to separate. However, it seems to me that for cases like homosexuality, and outright heresy, though painful, the choice seems clearer. The situation some of us here are facing is somewhat less defined.
What if you are in a church that has not outrightly denied the gospel, nor the Word of God, but has to a large extent assumed the gospel (using Don Carson’s semantics in his Gospel Coalition address) in its teaching, philosophy of ministry and practice ? or a charge that had not outrightly denied the sufficiency of scripture, but subtly adds to it to say that, “the Bible is enough, but there are also life-skills, management techniques etc. that the church can learn from outside the Scriptures”. Do you think some of these would warrant considerations for leaving ?
