Yosemite: Without Excuse
May 16th, 2008 by Sam
I just got back from a trip to Yosemite with fellow photogs from my church. One thing is certain, in viewing the splendor and majesty of the rockface of El Capitain and Half Dome, in staring at the vastness of Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point, in hiking to Vernal Falls to feel the rush of the powerful water falling over the cliff, one cannot leave that place without feeling a sense of smallness. This is why Romans 1:20 makes sense existentially: “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” In seeing His eternal power at Yosemite, I can see how native peoples would worship the earth. The point of Romans 1:20 is that people need to explain themselves amongst the majesty of such beauty. This should lead people to search for the true God; and yet, humanity too easily turns to itself for explanations, either by turning to the idolatry of wood, stone, and metal, or by turning to the idolatry of self through science and self-aggrandizement.We are without excuse after seeing the beauty of Yosemite. Enjoy God’s beauty.
