Mormons: Christians?
Jun 30th, 2007 by admin
No. I remember when AOL first came out back in the 2400k days, I was in a Christian AOL chat room and a Mormon came to visit. We began a conversation and at first I didn’t know he was a Mormon. But he eventually helped me unveiled his identity as a “LDS brother.” I was taken aback by the word ‘brother.’ Mormons were not brothers.
He pressed the conversation, letting me know that we’re all ‘Christians’ and should get along. However, that ‘all Christians’ moniker was quite disturbing. Here was a man whose faith was founded on American Joseph Smith’s fuller revelation of God’s Word. Here is someone whose faith held the Book of Mormon alongside the Bible as God’s revelatory word. Here is someone whose religion’s view of Jesus Christ did not hold the Trinitarian orthodox view of perfect God, perfect man, second person of the Triune God.
Orson Scott Card is an LDS author and he’ll be debating Al Mohler on beliefnet.com. Here was Mr. Card writes:
I am also happy to agree with him that when one compares our understanding of the nature of God and Christ, we categorically disagree with almost every statement in the “historic creeds and doctrinal affirmations” he refers to.
Listen to this quote from Evidence Ministries of an official LDS manual states about God:
God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret. If the veil were rent today, and the great God who holds this world in its orbit and who upholds all worlds and all things by his power was to make himself visible,—I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in form […] Remember that God, our heavenly Father, was perhaps once a child, and mortal like we our selves, and rose step by step in the scale of progress, in the school of advancement; has moved forward and overcome, until He has arrived at the point where He now is. (Achieving, 129)
How can this be the same God that we worship?
The closer we get to the presidential election with Mormon candidate Mitt Romney in the running, the more Christians will hear, “He’s a brother Christian.” We are not talking about minor points of doctrine, but the very Gospel itself is undermined by Mormon theology. I’m not saying that we should not vote for Romney because he’s Mormon, per se. I’m just saying we should call a spade a spade and not allow Mormonism to pass as a Christian denomination.
Evidence Ministries is a great resource on many questions regarding Mormons.
