Calvinist and Cool: Oxymoron?
Jun 27th, 2007 by admin
I say, “No.” Just read Mark Dever’s blog article entitled, “Where’d All These Calvinists Come From? Part 1 of 10,” and you’ll see that many of those at Together for the Gospel in 2006 were under the age of 30. The funny thing is that so many Emerging Church folk are looking for authenticity. Strangely enough, when I read about the lives (not just their writings, but the biographies) of so many Godly, Reformed people like Spurgeon, Edwards, Whitefield, Owen, Bunyan, etc., I see a humility and hunger and authenticity that is uncommon in our day. And it all stems from their understanding of sin, law, and grace. They see a God who is so great, who punishes sin, and must punish sin, saving sinners for His own glory. And in this, they revel in it and are zealous, even unto death, to preach this Gospel.
So if authenticity means being real, passionate, personal, zealous, vibrant, sometimes grieving and mourning over pain and suffering (many of these people lost numbers of their children through disease, I don’t think there can be anything more authentic then dealing with that type of pain), then these men and women understand authenticity and live it out. Authenticity is what is on the inside is how one lives on the outside. They did this and I desire to do the same. But oh how difficult it is to do so.

Sam, thanks again for pointing out the 9marks blog. It is one of the few worth regular reading.
