How Not to Save Gas
May 23rd, 2007 by admin
Well, considering prices are stratospheric, I thought I’d direct you to this site which notes that none of these actions will save gas at all:
1. Driving across town to save a nickel on a gallon of gas.
2. Driving on the highway with their windows down to avoid using the air conditioner.
3. Driving with their truck’s tailgate down.
4. Accelerating extremely slowly.

Actually, item #2 is incorrect. Not using AC will always save gas even if you have the windows down. I believe the “Myth Busters” demonstrated that the drag from having the windows down is not equal to using the AC in regards to fuel efficiency.
Also, the tailgate down can make a difference but only on long trips (400+ highway miles) but isn’t really worth it in the end.
At a nickel/gal cheaper will only save me .80 cents per tank.
Thanks for the link to my site. Unfortunately your buddy Luke is wrong. At highway speeds (above 50 mph) most cars achieve greater gas mileage with the windows rolled up and the AC turned on.
