Protestant No More

Why does Francis Beckwith, a leading Protestant Evangelical scholar going over to Rome, matter so much? It matters because of his reasoning. And when you examine Professor Beckwith’s reasoning, you can see how easily the lines can be blurred concerning justification, the most basic tenets of Christian theology. It matters because if it can happen to Professor Beckwith, it can happen to the common lay person. And of course, it matters if the RC view on justification is wrong and can and does lead to eternal consequences.
Gene Veith has a great post (he’s a Lutheran and so has a unique perspective on this subject) on Dr. Beckwith’s recent change.

Hi P. Sam -
It’d be great to hear your thoughts on the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. I remember I was really struck, years ago, when J. Budziszewski (I guess a lesser known Protestant intellectual) converted to Catholicism. His writings had really influenced me, and he made me wonder if I didn’t really understand Catholic theology. This most recent conversion has made me wonder, again, about the real gap b/t Protestantism & Catholicism today.
I wrote about Catholicism and justification a while back here. And there are so many more resources out there on the subject. Let me know if this helps.
