Great Children’s Bibles

While I was in the East Coast, I picked up two outstanding children’s Bibles that I wanted to share with you. If you ever heard of the biblical theologian Gerhardus Vos, his wife Catherine Vos, wrote a 2 volume work called, The Child’s Story Bible: Old Testament and the The Child’s Story Bible: New Testament. It’s now put into one volume called, The Child’s Story Bible. There aren’t many pictures and it looks a bit old. So if you’re wanting something that is going to give your kids the warm fuzzies by looking at cucumbers and tomatoes telling the Bible with funny punch lines, this is not the Bible to get. But if you’re looking for a Bible that tells the story of the Bible and tells it well to children, these Bibles are awesome. I started reading the stories to my kids each night and they are captivated by them. She essentially paraphrases the Bible and does a great job in doing so. I would highly recommend these two Bibles. Here is a sample:
Chapter 10
“Jesus at the Wedding Feast
John 2A few miles from Nazareth was a little town called Cana.. The people of the two villages probably visited each other often, since they lived so near each other. Their children played together in the fields, and every year the people walked together down the road to Jeruslamen to celebrate the Passover.
In this village lived some friends of Mary, the mother of Joseph. A few days after Jesus met his followers, these people in Cana invited Mary and Jesus and his friends to a wedding party.
It was the custom of the Jews to celebrate a wedding by holding a feast. Sometimes the party lasted for two or three days. The guests had a good time, talking and eating and drinking.
As you can see, it’s simplified. She describes things with a bit more elucidation.
