City Church No Longer in the PCA
Jul 6th, 2006 by admin
This might not mean much for those outside of the PCA and the Bay Area, but City Church SF is leaving the PCA. I have known a couple of former associate pastors from City Church and so it saddens me to hear of this move, especially over the issue of women’s ordination. While I am a complementarian, I am not one that believes there is no possibilities of fellowship between complementarians and egalitarians. However, to leave the PCA over this issue is certainly cause for reflection. The PCA is a wonderful denomination with a growing hunger for the Gospel. Many of its leaders and pastors head up the charge for biblical faithfulness in a sea of cultural morass. Yet, they also recognize that engaging the culture and the world we live is still a part of the mission of the church.
I hope as City Church pursues the RCA, they will not leave behind the mission of the Gospel to the world focus that I believe the PCA does quite well and quite faithfully.

Sam, this is disturbing news. The article at the link you give states a couple of things. First, it says “The church is leaving the conservative PCA because its elders have come to disagree with chapters 8 and 9 of the denomination’s Book of Church Order (BCO) which limit the role of deacon and elder to males only”. Is the issue here what the BCO says or what the Bible says? It would be interesting to hear City Church’s argument/rationale. Again, the article notes that the RCA “has also wrangled with the biblical propriety of homosexuality. While the RCA continues to affirm heterosexual marriage as the biblical teaching, the denomination reinitiated ‘an honest and intentional dialogue on homosexuality.’”. Where does the RCA’s wrangling begin? With the Scriptures or with pressure to be more palatable to the public? It should not cause concern if a church/denomination wrestles with Scripture over contemporary issues. It should cause concern if a(nother) church/denomination compromises or abandons Biblical views to suit “culture”.
