How to Get the Congregation to Be Familiar With New Songs
May 2nd, 2006 by admin
Boy, as a current (hopefully soon to be former) worship leader, this has been an age old question. Well, wouldn’t you know Bob Kauflin has some very insightful thoughts on this subject. He gives these very practical suggestions:
1. Give away copies of the lyrics and/or the music on the Sunday you teach the song.
2. Let them know the CD’s they’re recorded on. If possible, sell them at your bookstore.
3. Sing from hymnals.
4. Organize nights where you gather simply to sing new songs.
5. After introducing a new song, sing it on two Sundays in the following four weeks.
- When Music Becomes Old or Great Over Many Listens
- Draw Me Close to Whom?
- 13 Observations from the 50 (48) Bestselling Christian Authors’ Books
- Copyrights Again
- Hope for Bad Vocals and Sinful Hearts

“Former”, Sam? Say it ain’t so. “Less frequent” perhaps?
Hey Sam, how about singing the Psalter? Hee hee.
Hee hee, I thought you could lead us in this before your untimely but necessary retirement from worship leading.
sam, you retiring from leading is like Jordan retiring…always ready to come back…ok, maybe the better analogy is ricky henderson =D j/k
i look forward every friday to Kauflin’s Q&A fridays….they are always so relevant and practical…my favorite part of his blog.
whenever i need justification to sing new songs i always refer to Psalm 96:1
heehee….
