Tom Wright, close but no cigar…

That’s the frustrating thing about NT Wright, he has some great things to say, holds to most classic ideals of orthodox Christianity, and yet, will add in a zinger that seems to undermine everything that he has just said. I read in an interview by the Australian news of NT Wright’s views on Dan Brown’s book, The DaVinci Code. Generally speaking, he had good things to say. But then he writes that though Marcus Borg doesn’t believe in the bodily resurrection, he still believes Borg is a Christian. Here are Wright’s own words:
Marcus Borg really does not believe Jesus Christ was bodily raised from the dead. But I know Marcus well: he loves Jesus and believes in him passionately. The philosophical and cultural world he has lived in has made it very, very difficult for him to believe in the bodily resurrection.
I actually think that’s a major problem and it affects most of whatever else he does, and I think that it means he has all sorts of flaws as a teacher, but I don’t want to say he isn’t a Christian.
Wow! For Tom Wright the NT scholar, I wonder what he thinks about Paul’s letter to the Corinthians when he writes:
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
I guess there are many that should be pitied!

Sam, my question is this: don’t these guys see Christ’s resurrection as an essential feature that distinguishes Christianinty from other belief systems? Do they view Christ as diety or just humanity? Do they view him as perfect? Re: your earlier posts on atonement - would they believe in propitiation/substitution? OK, that’s questions …
Sam, I just want to say that I love Abe Lincoln and believe in him passionately. I do find it difficult to believe in his bodily resurrection, but that should be no problem because that was never a claim. I hope that as a result of this confession you do not consider me to be a good Republican!
It seems the major difference between Borg and demons is that the demons do believe in Christ’s deity and probably His resurrection. I wonder if NTW considers them Christians …
